The day started at Long Dog winery with David Lawrason, one of Canada's leading wine experts, educating us on the up and coming Prince Edward County wine region. We followed this up with a sampling of Long Dog's best releases, the Pinot Gris my personal favourite. Then the eclectic, James Lahti indulged us with his finest still in the barrel - hidden gems for those in the know; a very 'happy' 2007 Pinot Noir was the highlight. Then it was off on a lovely drive through the countryside to the Grange of Prince Edward; quite the parade; an Audi R8, Porsche Boxster, BMW Z4, Audi TT, etc. At the Grange we were treated to a wonderful food and wine pairing; 2007 Trumpour's Mill Chardonnay unoaked aged sur lie for 3.5 months paired with a County butternut squash soup. 2006 Trumpour's Mill Gamay Noir paired with a beef satay. 2006 Trumpour's Mill Pinot Noir paired with a fall meat pie. 2007 Grange Pinot Noir and 2007 Trumpour's Mill Pinot Noir paired with a goat cheese and pear tart, 5 year old cheddar and herbed chevre on parmesan baguette. Caroline Granger topped off our visit with an informative journey through her vineyards and barrel room. We arrived at Norman Hardie winery to a tasting table set up in the lovely sunshine. Here we were treated to samplings of several of their finest wines accompanied by Norman Hardie's entertaining musings on Ontario viniculture and how to coax the best out of a Chardonnay or Pinot Noir. He definitely knows what he's doing! Final stop was Huff Estates where we were hosted in their barrel cellar for a private tasting. In addition to fine samples of the local County varietals, we were surprised to see the bottles of Champagne-method wines that will be released in the years to come. This will be interesting.
