2008 - The year in Automobiles
2008 was a wild ride for the auto industry! Gasoline opened the year at about $1/litre, then progressively climbed to $1.45; remarkably it closed the year at about $0.70/litre. Sales of large SUVs and trucks stalled, putting the Big Three into a tailspin; values of used vehicles sunk to reflect U.S. market pricing; manufacturers took residual losses on lease returns. The concurrent economic crisis slowed vehicle sales globally causing governments around the world to offer keep-alive packages to the auto industry. The Canadian dollar moved from above par to US$0.80, closing the door on cheaper cross-border cars.
The silver lining in all this - it's one of the best times ever to acquire a car. New and used vehicle prices still reflect the stronger Canadian Dollar; the global slowdown has increased allocations of scarce vehicles to the Canadian market and driven up incentives from the manufacturers; interest rates have dropped to historic lows; gasoline prices have fallen and are likely remain lower for the next 12-18 months until the world economy starts firing again. 'It's an enthusiast buyer's market' - low acquisition cost and a reprieve from high fuel costs lets you enjoy that performance vehicle. Good news for our environment as well; the rise in gasoline prices to historic highs mid last year seems to have fundamentally altered the automotive consumer's psyche; fuel efficiency is now a major purchase criteria and manufacturers are responding with innovations that deliver fun along with higher efficiency - to the ultimate benefit of the environment.
Our advice - consider the manufacturer's cash purchase incentives only if you intend to keep your vehicle for 5-10 years; otherwise, take advantage of their Financing and Leasing offers - DreamFleet can streamline the acquisition process and assure you are receiving the best possible and most sensible deal. Don't want to make a long term commitment - let DreamFleet put you in a vehicle for 6-24 months.
All the best for 2009.

The replacement for the A4 Cabriolet, the A5/S5 Cabriolet retains it's cloth top to maximize interior/luggage space and up/down top performance (15sec at a max speed of 50km/h). Expected availability - Fall 2009.

For those the regular R8 wasn't fast enough - a V10 is on it's way reaching further into exotic territory; 5.2 l / 528hp / 3.9s (0-100) / 315 km/h. Watch for it at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

The 4-door coupe segment is heating up; the A7 joins the Mercedes CLS and upcoming Porsche Panamera. A range of engines; V6, V8 and V10 - should be a stunner. Watch for it at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

The third generation of this classic roadster comes with a retractable hardtop; the range topping version will come with the lovely 3.0l turbo six for 300hp and 5.2s (0-100). Expected Spring '09.

More elegant styling; with a new 400hp twin-turbo V-8. Expected March '09.

Only slightly smaller than the current X3 with reduced fuel consumption. Don't expect before late 2009 or early 2010.

A competitive Hybrid at a bench setting price point. Spring 2009.

A four-door sports coupe from Porsche! Watch for it at the Shanghai Motor Show in April and at your Porsche dealer Summer 2009.

The crossover from MINI; expect four doors and a hatchback - taller and longer than the Clubman. Don't expect it till late 2009.
